How to Get Married in a National Park

All of the most popular U.S. National Parks allow marriage ceremonies to take place within their park boundaries. However, all parks require those wishing to get married to submit completed applications for “special use” permits, along with upfront fees. These applications should be submitted several months before your planned elopement wedding. Obviously, the more popular parks such as Yosemite or the Great Smoky Mountains will require you to submit your applications early. Keep in mind that National Parks, by their very nature, can be unpredictable places to stage a wedding ceremony. However, you are already in the “elopement” state of mind if you’ve read this far. As a result, unpredictability won’t be nearly as significant an issue with you and your future spouse as someone who is planning a traditional “big” wedding, where “going with the flow” is considered a bad thing. Unfortunately, too many traditional wedding ceremonies don’t place a value on spontaneity!

Your elopement ceremony, within a U.S. National Park, will truly be a memorable experience for the both of you! There are few places on earth that can be considered quite as beautiful, as spiritual, or as uplifting as America’s national park treasures. And don’t forget: there are literally dozens of state and county parks scattered across the country that also allow wedding ceremonies. Most of these larger parks will provide permit information on their websites. So, why not get married in a national, state, or county park?
