To get a marriage license in California, both individuals must appear in person at a County Clerk’s office. It is not necessary to be residents of the particular California county, or even of the state of California. A valid picture ID is required for each individual. Blood tests are not required. For those previously married, proof of the dissolution of the former marriage must be provided. Marriage licenses in California are valid for 90 days after the date of issuance. Those persons who do not get married within 90 days must purchase a new marriage license. In addition to the license, California requires that the union be “solemnized” via a civil or religious ceremony performed by an officiant recognized as such within the state. Fees for California marriage licenses vary by county. For example, Santa Barbara county has a $100 fee, while Kern county maintains a fee of $68. Contact your preferred county’s Clerk of Courts office for the exact fees for your license.
